Middle School Electives

Many 5th graders look forward to changing classes and using a locker in middle school!  Changing classes is exciting, but it can be confusing unless you understand the framework behind the middle schedule.  Put simply,  your child will attend six classes each school day.  Five of those classes are required by the state and include the following subjects: reading, math, science, social studies, and a combination of physical education, technology, and health education.  The sixth class is a fine arts elective that the student may choose.  When students are in the sixth grade at Sun Valley Middle School, they only have TWO CHOICES for their elective:

1. Beginning Band    OR    2. Fine Arts Exploration Rotation
  • Beginning Band meets all year long during the school day, just like MATH and LANGUAGE ARTS.
  • Fine Arts Exploration Rotation also meets every day all year long, but the teacher and subject change every six weeks.  During this year, students will explore six different fine arts classes, each lasting only six weeks.  The courses in the Fine Arts Exploration Rotation change depending on staffing but typically include visual art, drama, conversational Spanish, keyboarding, and general music.

The 6th grade year is the ONLY YEAR that students can register for band without having prior musical knowledge and performance skills on a band instrument.  So, if students are interested in learning to play an instrument, they must register as a 6th grader and commit to the year long class.  If, at the conclusion of the 6th grade year, students wish to try another Fine Arts elective, they are free to do so as 7th and 8th graders.
